Dell Inspiron 15 5585 Review – 2023 Updated!

Dell Inspiron 15 5585 with AMD Upgrade

The Dell Inspiron series has always impressed us with its solid performance and affordable pricing. This time, the brand has done it again. The all-new Dell Inspiron 15 5585 is an exciting yet budget-friendly laptop. It has a reasonably powerful AMD 7 series processor, 8 Gb of ram, and a handsome 256 Gb of storage to help you easily meet your daily computing tasks.

Note: The Dell 15 5585 Is an AMD Upgrade Version of The Original Inspiron 5584 (15-Inches)

This specific laptop model is an excellent alternative to laptops that are compatible with Intel processors. Even their inbuilt GPU performed beyond our expectations. Causal gamers won’t be disappointed here. In short, there is so much to like about this particular laptop. This Dell Inspiron 15 5585 Review is all you need to know before buying one. Let us get into it!

1: Design & Build

When we talk about budget-friendly laptops, their poor build often disappoints us. However, in the case of Inspiron 5585, the scenario is pretty much different. The overall build quality of this laptop is quite good, in fact. In addition, the buttons have a good tactile feel to them.

The keyboard, touchpad, and plastic plus aluminum casing also give a good feel. The overall build quality here seems pretty decent. Now, if we compare it with its Intel counterpart, the differences in terms of design and build are minimal.

However, the AMD version is a bit lighter and thinner than the Intel one. So, that’s an advantage here.

2: Color Options

A range of color options backs the sleek and lightweight design of /Dell 15 5585. Apart from the silver and black colors, you also get the rose gold color here. So, the laptop may attract students and business professionals who also prefer a bit of styling element.

Not to forget the fact that you are already getting a lightweight and modern-looking design here. The Dell Inspiron 15 5585 also has a bezel-less display (to some extent) which enhance its beauty. That’s why these exciting color options are a big plus on top of all these features.

3: Display

The display here is 15.6 inches. The resolution has been kept to Full-HD (Not bad for a budget laptop). With 15 inches laptop, you have plenty of space to multitask. Given that the Inspiron 5585 is powered by the latest AMD 7 series processor, you will surely enjoy multitasking on this 15-inch display. Note that both versions (AMD and Intel) come with the same 1080p panel.

It is basically the LG Philips LP156WFC IPS panel. Therefore, the color reproduction, viewing angles, saturation, and contrast levels are pretty much up to the mark. In addition, the bezels of the display are quite minimal. So, this 15.6 inches with 1080p resolution is more than enough for an average user. On the other hand, tech enthusiasts may have liked an inclusion of a 4k IPS panel.

The screen here looks a bit glossy. However, if you increase the brightness level, things get better. Furthermore, the response time of this screen was nothing substantial. But again, we have to take the price into consideration as well. So, for a sub $1000 price tag, this 1080p panel is pretty good.

4: Keyboard & Touch Pad

Apart from the display and processor, it’s the keyboard and touchpad of a laptop that could make or break a great deal. Luckily, even here, the Dell Inspiron 15 performs quite well. It has a nice wide keyboard.

The space between each button is nice and wide. The buttons also feel good upon pressing. One thing is for sure typing on this keyboard is going to be a breeze. Furthermore, the buttons are also backlit.

The brightness of the backlit keyboard was on the lower side, according to many users. However, we think it’s not bad, given the price range of the laptop. If we talk about some other downsides of the keyboard, the arrow keys are a bit smaller.

The page down and page up are also not present. Those users who have to maintain a ton of spreadsheets may find it a deal breaker.

Now, let us talk about the touchpad. Compared to the keyboard, the touchpad performed even better in our testing. It is accurate and responsive. The touchpad also has a soft touch feel to it. So, from the keyboard and touchpad, there isn’t anything major to dislike about.

5: Connectivity

The Dell Inspiron 15 has all the ports and connectivity that you will ever need. From the traditional Wi-Fi connectivity to the more advanced Bluetooth 5.1, this laptop is no short of any ports. For example, you also get a USB Type C port which can be used to charge the battery here.

Note that you get a traditional charging port (AC- Adapter) that works fine. For faster charging, we like the inclusion of a type-C port here. You can charge the full battery in an hour or so. We will talk about its battery life later in this review.

From the front side, there are no any ports located; it is all nice and clean. However, you get the majority of connectivity ports on the left side. Some of these ports are HDMI 1.4a, 2x USB 3.1 Gen. 1 Type-A, 3.5 mm combo audio, AC adapter, and USB 3.1 Type-C Gen. 1 with DP/Power Delivery.

6: Storage Options

The base variant of Inspiron 15 AMD comes with 256 GB of Storage. However, you can always expand it. We think it’s a pretty storage capacity for starters. But, for example, home users and students would be happy to see an SSD (Solid State Drive) storage.

Therefore, the loading times are snappy. You can open and also apps without too much of a delay. However, the average read and write speeds of these SSDs aren’t on par with some expensive offerings. But, again, that’s not something we were expecting from a budget offering.

7: Performance

The performance of a laptop is an aspect where you shouldn’t make any compromises. Some people think that affordable laptops may not offer the best performance. Today, this concept has changed. That’s because brands like Lenovo and Dell have started offering the best affordable laptops.

For instance, the laptop model we are reviewing is no exception in this regard. It comes with an AMD processor. Now, those who think AMD-powered laptops are great shouldn’t be worried. That’s because AMD has really improved its processor’s heat sink capability. Now, these processors don’t heat up as they used to years ago.

The 15 5585 from Dell comes with an AMD Ryzen 7 series (3700 U) processor. According to AMD, the Ryzen 7 (3700 U) processor is almost 10 times faster than its predecessor.

On the other hand, the Intel-powered Dell 15 5585 offered better single-threading performance. The AMD 3700 U wasn’t far behind. It offered pretty consistent clock speed (even when we pushed it to its paces)

8: GPU Performance

The Dell Inspiron 15 is equipped with a Radeon Vega 8 integrated graphics card, providing enhanced performance and power efficiency. In addition, this GPU generates up to 4K resolution video, allowing you to enjoy streaming services and gaming in stunning clarity. It also supports DirectX 12, making it ideal for modern game development and high-end graphical applications.

With its powerful processing capabilities, you can expect smooth and fast performance when taking on the most demanding tasks. With up to 6GB of GDDR5 VRAM, you can expect immersive visuals with no stuttering or lag. You can also connect up to four independent displays simultaneously. This means you can keep more windows open and switch between tasks quickly. So, from the GPU performance, we were really impressed.

10: System Performance

The Dell 15 5585 performed fairly well in our testing. The actual user doesn’t bother with the benchmark results. That’s why we tested this laptop in different ways. To our surprise, the system performance was more than what we expected.

Apps open up fast and easily. Further, the multitasking was also on par with other laptops that fall in this price range.

11: Performance Verdict

In short, the overall performance of 15 5585 from Dell is something to brag about. The AMD Ryzen processor, the reliable GPU Unit and 8 Gb of ram are enough to help you meet your daily computing needs. The benchmarks (a few though) were also on-par with some of the expensive options in this price range.

Therefore, users can even use this machine for video editing as the AMD’s graphic processing unit is pretty capable of handling some extra graphic processing. In case, the 256 GB SSD storage isn’t sufficient for you, the option of upgrading is always there. So, there is some room for further enhancing this business laptop’s performance.

Dell Inspiron 15 5585 – A Quick Rundown

The Dell Inspiron 15 5585 has a slim profile that’s easy to take with you anywhere. It measures just 0.8 inches thick and weighs 4.3 pounds, making it the perfect companion for your travels or even if you’re heading out to the coffee shop to work on projects. In addition, the laptop features a 15.6- inch FHD touch display with narrow bezels, which makes it a great option for watching movies, streaming content, and more.

Performance

An AMD Ryzen 7 3700U processor powers the laptop with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. This will provide you with plenty of speed and performance for casual tasks and multitasking. You can also upgrade its storage and RAM as needed, which is perfect for those who want more power from their laptop.

The Inspiron 15 sports a full-size keyboard with a number pad, making it easy to type and navigate menus quickly. It also has a precision touchpad that works well with multi-finger gestures and provides accurate cursor control.

For graphics, the laptop comes equipped with a 2 GB AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics card. This will be more than enough for casual gaming and light photo/video editing.

i) Speaker Output

As usual, you get two speakers here (a stereo speaker set-up). Again, the sound quality is good. Note that the speakers don’t produce enough bass; however, its price tag is fine. Note that the loudness is pretty average here.

We wish the company could have kept the peak volume level a bit higher. Anyhow, for multimedia experience, these speakers are good enough.

ii) Temperature and Heat Control

As we highlighted at the start, AMD processors are now much better when it comes to energy efficiency. Unfortunately, they also don’t heat up to a great extent. We found that the same was the case with Inspiron 5585.

Its aluminum casing does get a bit warm. When gaming, it may reach temperatures around 12 degrees Celsius. But again, that’s a pretty bearable temperature range. You won’t feel stressed out with these slightly warm temperature ratings.

iii) Battery Life

Last but not the least, we had to test the battery of the Dell 15 5585. If we talk about the batteries’ capacity, there isn’t anything special to highlight here. The 42 Wh battery sounds like an average-sized battery.

But in reality, its performance impressed us a lot. It can easily last for around 5 to 7 hours of constant use-age. For a business laptop with an affordable price tag, that’s some good long hours of computing.

On the other hand, the charging time isn’t that impressive. It takes around 2 to 2.5 hours to charge the battery from empty to full.
